Case Study: Workforce Transition and Outplacement

Business Challenge: How do we move from a manufacturing organisation to a sales and distribution environment?

Responding to global pressure for competitive pricing, this organisation moved manufacturing offshore to China, requiring a significant reduction in headcount and the transition from manufacturing to a sales and distribution enterprise. Right Management was able to assist with a number of challenges including;

  • The retention and productivity of essential staff during the transition phase despite the imminent disestablishment of their role
  • maintenance of quality control locally while manufacturing offshore
  • identification of staff with the skills and aptitude to adapt to continually changing roles during the extended transition phase
  • selection of staff to take the organisation forward as a sales and distribution business.

Right Management provided career transition services to redundant employees from the day of announcement including group workshops, individual counselling and establishing an on-site employment centre linking job seekers to local employers and recruiters. Many were long term employees with a limited range of experience and language difficulties.

We provided Career Planning to staff considered essential to retain during the transition phase to discourage them from exiting prematurely. Right Management also advised on the process for identifying staff with the flexibility to move from role to role during the manufacturing wind down and those suited to transition to a sales and distribution role. By the provision of timely services tailored to the specific needs of the organisation, Right Management contributed to a seamless transition with no adverse media or union reaction.
